Karnataka Bans Online ‘Games of Chance’ – But Will Move Stand Legal Scrutiny?
Experts say the Karnataka Police Bill, 2021, which tries to ban online gambling and betting, may confront legal obstacles.
The Karnataka government on Tuesday, 21 September, passed a controversial bill that outlaws online gambling and ‘games of chance’. The Legislative Assembly decided on Saturday to change the Karnataka Police Act, to bring the boycott into impact.
This development comes after the Karnataka High Court encouraged the state government to think of law on online gambling.
Still, experts say the Karnataka Police (Amendment) Bill, 2021 may confront legal obstacles, as it needs clarity, especially over how authorities recognize a movement, website, or application as ‘dangerous.’
Curiously, this Bill likewise comes when fantasy gaming players and startups are hoping to take advantage of the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup and the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL).
