As per a survey conducted by adtech firm InMobi, nearly 45% of India’s mobile users began playing games on their smartphones during the coronavirus pandemic. The enduring impact of the pandemic implied that people besides spending more time on mobile gaming also tried out a variety of diverse apps.
On an average day, time spent engaging on gaming apps rose during the day with 40% of Indians stating that they generally play in 10-minute sessions – in between meetings, chores, meals, etc. A huge 84% of the dedicated gamers stated that they play for a minimum of an hour in a single session.
The report further states that women constitute 43% of the mobile gaming audience in the country, with 12% of them from the age range of 25-44 years & 28% over the age of 45.
According to the All India Gaming Federation (AIGF), online gaming witnessed 12% growth during the lockdown period.
As per a report by BARC & Nielsen, the average time spent on mobile games per user per week surged from 151 minutes prior to the lockdown to 218 minutes during the lockdown phase.
At the same time, standalone games listed on Google Play Store & iOS App Store experienced a 51% & 30% growth, respectively, in revenue from user spending on in-app purchases in the year 2020, app analytics firm Sensor Tower reported.
India’s online gaming industry is foreseen to witness growth at a CAGR of 40% to $2.8 billion by the year 2022, rising from $1.1 billion in the year 2019, as per a Deloitte India report published in January 2021.
Currently, India is among the top 5 mobile gaming markets in the world, constituting around 13% share of total game sessions internationally. As per KPMG’s media & entertainment report, the country’s gaming user base surpassed 365 million in March 2020.
