AIGF, Online Gaming Companies Move Karnataka HC Challenging State’s Online Gambling Law
The All India Gaming Federation (AIGF), a skill gaming industry body, alongside four other real-money gaming organizations has moved the Karnataka High Court challenging the state government’s online gambling law that happened on October 5.

The petitioners challenged the constitutional validity of amendments made to the Karnataka Police (Amendment) Act which had prohibited all types of online games that are played with stakes.
According to a statement in Inc42, Roland Landers, CEO of AIGF said that they had no issues with the state government handling unfamiliar betting organizations however the issue with the amendment was that it had unilaterally proclaimed game of skill as commensurate to betting if the purchase is involved. As this boycott would hurt the homegrown online gaming industry, they had moved the court, he said.
The amendment was made by the state government after open interest prosecutions were filed in the court looking for the prohibition of online betting games.
As indicated by the Karnataka Police (Amendment) Act, 2021 that was told on October 5, all online games including all types of betting or wagering including those that valued tokens for terms of money or electronic means and virtual currency, electronic transfer of funds in connection with any game of chance are prohibited.
The notification additionally expresses “any act or risking money on the obscure consequence of an event including for a game of skill”, as indicated by media reports.
In another situation, as of late, the Madras High Court had struck down the amendment made to the Tamil Nadu Gaming Act, 1930 that forced prohibition on online games played with stakes. A comparable act passed by the Kerala government to such online games was struck down by the Kerala High Court.
