Future of OTT in India
OTT viewership is currently in its golden period in India, aided significantly by the coronavirus lockdown. In 2012, India only had 2 OTT platform providers, which has now risen to 40. This depicts the significant rise of OTT in India over the past decade or so.
With the coronavirus pandemic still showing no signs of going away, find below a concise outlook on the potential future of OTT in the country:
1) USD 5 billion market size by the year 2023: A Boston Consulting Group report has foretold that the Indian OTT content market is at a decisive moment & is estimated to reach $5 bn in size by the year 2023.
2) Rural India has opened its doors as a new distribution channel: Cheap smartphones & internet availability in rural areas has led OTT players to focus on developing regional content, for attracting and engaging the regional audience.
3) Online gaming has seen rapid growth during the nationwide lockdown: The All India Gaming Federation (AIGF) has said that online gaming grew by 12% during the lockdown period.
AIGF CEO Roland Landers said, “Online skill gaming hasn’t seen any adverse impact since players are participating digitally unlike in physical gaming. Online card games and digital e-sports have seen a higher uptick in the past few weeks as people look for ways to pass time indoors. The volume of data going towards online gaming is also growing and will continue to grow if this situation persists.”
