Gaming Summit 2021: Understanding The Indian Gaming Consumer
The gaming industry has undergone tremendous changes, especially during the pandemic. Gaming is no longer just something you do for fun; people consume this content, participate in games, share, and basically like watching people play games. A panel hosted by Satrajit Sen, Director of Product and Community at ET BrandEquity.com, discussed who the consumer is, what their definition is, what their characteristics and demographics are, and how eventually, gamers become active professional gamers.
Sen opened the platform to the team members, namely Zupee Company and Director of Public Affairs Dr. Subi Chaturvedi; Manasvi Dalvi, gamer, gaming YouTuber; AIGF CEO Ronald Landers and gamer and content creator Shagufta `Xyaa` Iqbal on how they define Indian gaming consumers.
“Until recently, it wasn’t until we used AIGF as a structured self-regulatory organization and the voice of the industry that we really studied games as a segment,” Chaturvedi shared.
Iqbal further defined Indian gaming consumers, adding that they just want to be part of a community of people who have the same interests as them. “For me, Indian game consumers want to express themselves, whether as a live viewer or as the protagonist of the game. I think they want to be part of the community of like-minded people,” he said.
Ronald Landers, AIGF CEO brought the discussion into a slightly different context and talked about the evolution of Indian players. “Traditionally, Indians are good at creative investment and technology, which is our strength. When you combine them, it is obvious that we can create games. The second thing is obviously visits. Therefore, we are lucky enough to get the best content, whether it’s games or sports. Once you gain access and have the basics you have to talk about, such as the popularity of smartphones, access to affordable data, this leads to the whole explosion,” he said.
